Pei Gui Hall and Dr. Lin Kai-tai's Clinic

Pei Gui Hall (Hall for Fostering Osmanthus) is the former clinic and residence of Dr. Lin Kai-tai, grandfather of Lin Hwai-min, the founder of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan.

Dr. Lin Kai-tai (1895-1942) was a renowned physician, poet and Chinese calligrapher during the Japanese rule (1895-1945). Upon finishing the Medical School of the Government-General of Taiwan in 1916, he began practicing in his hometown, Hsin Kang.  Often giving treatments to poor people for free, he was regarded as the " poet-doctor " or the " guardian angel."

Dr. Lin's father, Lin Wei-chao (1868-1934), also a poet and sought-after calligrapher, was among the last batch of literati scholars passing the imperial exam before the island was ceded by the Qing Dynasty. Despite the colonial ban on teaching Chinese, Lin Wei-chao endeavored to continue the Chinese literati tradition by teaching at home and organizing the poetry society. When the 1906 earthquake destroyed the Feng Tian Temple and the Ta Hsing Temple, he took upon himself to rally communal rebuilding efforts. Lin Wei-chao served several important political and financial positions in the region, including Director of Hsin Kang District, Member of Tainan Prefectural Council, and Chairman of Chiayi Bank.

In 1933, Dr. Lin Kai-tai and his family moved into this complex, with the storefront serving as his clinic and the main building housing the family quarter. Lin Wei-chao wrote the plaque of Pei Gui Hall (Hall for Fostering Osmanthus) for Dr. Lin, wishing his descendants to excel with decency, just like osmanthus burgeoning with subtle fragrance.

Dr. Lin's eleven children grew up here and achieved academic excellence that leads to a popular nickname of the place, " the Den of PhDs." Over the years, they have contributed to various professional fields and are widely respected.

Lin Ching-sheng, Dr. Lin's eldest son, served as Minister of the Interior and Senior Advisor to the President. His two younger brothers followed their father's footsteps: Lin Hsin-tze was Chief Advisor of Antituberculosis in the Western Pacific Regions, WHO, while Lin Ben-ran the founding chairman of Otolaryngology Department at the Kaohsiung Medical University. Dr. Lin's grandson, Lin Hwai-min, founded Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan and his choreographic creations are internationally recognized.

Pei Gui Hall was designated as the county monument by the Chiayi County Government in 2016 in honor of Dr. Lin Kai-tai and his family's contribution to Taiwan in medicine, politics and culture. Subsequently, the Lin Family decided to transfer the ownership of the complex to state safeguarding in the spirit of public service within the family tradition. In 2022, with support from the Ministry of Culture, Pei Gui Hall opens to the public after careful conservation, restoration and revitalization.
